Explore the Bhagirath Palace in Chandni Chowk for Diwali Decor

The festival of lights, is around the corner. I know you all love Diwali festival just like me! Since I moved to Delhi, I never miss visiting Bhagirath Palace before diwali to shop for some décor for my house. You can also go out shopping and bring in some new lights this year. Well in this blog I am taking you to the streets of the famous electronic market in Delhi called Bhagirath Palace.

It is on a walking distance from Lal Quila Metro Station and Chandini Chowk Metro Station. You can walk or also take rickshaws which are available at the metro stationIn this huge wholesale market for lamps and light fixtures you can find all you need, from steampunk lamps and vintage chandeliers, to cafe-type lamps and even 35 rupees fairy lights, this market has it all. I am sure you’ll love the variety too!

The first thing that got my attention were the beautiful Paper lampshades in the market. They are a novel oriental way of decorating the house on Diwali. They are an easy buy and available in amazing patterns and colours. The cost varies from 150 to 300 depending on the different sizes you wish to buy.

From basic light bulbs and fairy lights to fancy lampposts and chandeliers, this market has got it all. On the street you get your lights for as cheap as Rs.30, while the fancier stores selling exclusive lighting fixtures could charge you as much as Rs. 30,000.

Diwali torans or wall hangings are not only decorative pieces but also auspicious elements for the season. While I was moving around I got my eyes on a great variety of such colorful torans and I ended up buying a pair for a reasonable price of 100 rupees.

The Forgotten History

Begum Samru was a courtesan during the end of the Mughal Era. She was married to a European soldier and had risen to a level of some importance back then. It was she who built the palace. With time, the property changed hands and eventually landed up in the possession of a local trader, Seth Bagirath. Hence the name Bagirath Palace. Even today, if you care to look hard enough you can see parts of the palace but most of it is now covered with shops and stalls selling every kind of electrical lighting possible.

Today, the area has been occupied by electrical shops and the building is only a shadow of what it used to be. The symbol of Begum Samru’s power lies neglected, obscured by the display boards, posters, in darkness behind the bright lights emanating from the shops, visible only to those who are acquainted with its past.

Must Visit Place

If you live in Delhi or NCR and love to decorate your house with lots of lights, then Bhagirath Palace is one place you need to hit up for affordable but stunning lights. Even if you’re not looking to buy anything, this market is a sight to behold when the sun sets and could be even stated as a Photographer’s paradise, as the various shades of lights after dark, make for endless possibilities for photography.

So, be it to get electrical fittings at their cheapest price, or to spice up your space, or even just for photography, visit Bhagirath Palace for an experience that’ll light up your world, if nothing else.

Here I will say a goodbye. Don’t forget to share your feedback and suggestions in the comment below.
